About Butch Griffin, chairmaker

I make American Windsor chairs here in Jefferson County, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.

My wife and I live in a historic house (circa 1800) with a one-man shop out back, where I make my chairs one at a time.
For more than 40 years, I've been a furniture maker, historic millworker, and chairmaker. I spent most of my career making furnishings and fixtures such as wall panels and mantels for historic houses with accompanying furniture, so Windsor chairs was a natural transition.

Using draw knives, spoke shaves, and a variety of other hand tools, making a Windsor chair is about as gratifying a way to spend my day as I can imagine.
